Vatican Denounces Marriage of Archbishop
VOA News
28 May 2001 13:11 UTC

The Vatican says a Roman Catholic archbishop who married a physician in a group wedding can no longer be considered a bishop.

Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro Valls says Emmanuel Milingo, the former archbishop of Lusaka, Zambia, has put himself outside the church.

On Sunday, Mr. Milingo married physician Marie Sung, 43, in a mass wedding ceremony conducted by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon in New York. His bride was chosen for him by Rev. Moon.

The Roman Catholic Church does not recognize the marriages of its clergy. Mr. Navarro Valls says the Vatican regrets Mr. Milingo's action.
