Soon | Mgr Emmanuel
Milingo, 71, was thrown out of the Church not because he had wed,
but because his 43-year-old Korean wife is a Moonie, Vatican
observers said. By "taking part in a public ritual of marriage with
the [Rev Sun Myung] Moon sect" the archbishop emeritus of Lusaka,
Zambia, had "put himself without the Catholic Church", said a
Vatican spokesman.
Mgr Milingo, whose group-healing
and exorcism sessions during Mass have long made him
unpopular with Rome, was married by Sun Myung Moon, the Unification
Church founder, to Maria Sung, a doctor, in a New York hotel with 60
other couples.
After the ceremony he said his marriage was valid and that he
wanted to remain a Catholic and have children. He said: "Twenty
years of being humiliated by the Church of Rome has forced to search
more carefully for the truth," adding that he had found it in the
teachings of Sun Myung Moon.
