Marriage snub to Vatican

29may01

NEW YORK: African Catholic Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo, an outspoken opponent of celibacy for priests, yesterday married a Korean in a mass wedding presided over by the Reverend Sun Moon, head of the Unification Church.

The former archbishop of Lusaka, 71, married Dr Maria Sung, 43, chosen for him by Mr Moon in a ceremony involving 60 couples.

A Vatican spokesman said no action would be taken until after a formal declaration from the Zambian preacher, who had not carried out official religious functions for the church for some time.

The Archbishop said he was not joining the "Moonies", who are known for their cult-like behaviour, including mass marriages in major sporting venues around the world.
